Well, it’s the little things that made Makita into the revered giant it is today. The manufacturer’s attempt to balance performance and price has put them on a pedestal for many power tool enthusiasts.

While Makita made its name by bringing innovation to circular saws, as the years progressed, they focused on different projects. One such highly successful undertaking is the Makita SP6000J1.

This track saw took the power tool industry by storm. Even to this day, a lot of people (including me) are big fans (for many reasons explained later) of the Makita SP6000J1.

With track saws becoming increasingly popular because of their versatility, users are leaning towards track saws instead of the bulkier table or miter saws. That’s why I’ve decided to break this tool down to bite-sized pieces in this Makita SP6000J1 review.

Taking a Long Hard Look: Makita SP6000J1 Reviews

Power That Cuts Through Different Wood Types

First of all, the SP6000J1 has a 12 AMP motor with an adjustable speed control dial. This powerful motor provides stable and consistent performance for different materials. Besides, the speed control allows you to set the speed (2,000 – 5,200 RPM) for operation.

The question here is- why would you NEED a range of speed settings? Wouldn’t a single speed setting be better? The answer is- NO! Depending on the finish you want after a cut, the RPM needs to be adjusted. The theory is simple- more speed = finer finish.

Also, the speed is constant, and the end result is always splinter-free. I’ve tried the Makita SPJ60001 out in different speed settings. Every time I had a big smile on my face after I observed what came out after each pass.

The motor is not just powerful. It can protect itself as well. There is a current limiter that holds electrical surges and protects the motor from burnouts.

As a cherry on top, there is the soft-start technology. Older saws had this issue of jerking uncontrollably when started. It happened because excessive power jumped the saws into action. Well, the SP6000J1 takes time to build momentum. You won’t have to deal with any kickbacks, thanks to this feature.

Besides, an electric brake works for safe and comfortable use. It can be a lifesaver in case of any emergency.

Accuracy & Precision Made Better

The reason behind track saw’s popularity is the accuracy you get from each cut. However, Makita SP6000J1 took precision cutting to a whole other level by including a few handy features.

For starters, there is a bevel lock on both sides of the tool. What this does is that it holds the track saw in place when you’re trying to get the perfect bevel angle.

Usually, when performing high-quality bevel cuts, the user has to put a lot of effort into holding the saw in place. With the SP6000J1’s dual-lock feature, you can rest easy as the saw remains stationary even without your involvement.

The bevel capacity ranges from -1 to 45 degrees. That’s pretty standard, considering the price point of this track saw. Also, the -1-bevel angle helps with tight joineries.

Besides, the 6-1/2 blade size gives you enough cutting depth for a number of projects. Well, the 8-1/2-inch blade will give you more depth of cut. But the 6-1/2 is a safer option as it sits pretty between the 8-1/2 and 4-1/2.

Furthermore, it works together with a 55-inch guide rail to provide tear-free precision cuts. The track stays stationary on the guide rail so that you can simply make the bevel cuts or long rip cuts. You can always change the depth of cut and even use the depth stop to limit the depth.

Finally, the SP6000J1 can work as an alternative to miter saws when it comes to compound miter cuts. All you need is a miter gauge, and you’re good to go.

However, make sure you practice the cuts and understand the difference between miter and circular saws to get a clearer picture of the extent of use.

Lightweight & Comfortable Design

Makita SP6000J1 Plunge Circular Saw

Apart from power and performance, this track saw earned the spotlight because of its lightweight design as well. The convenient body ensures operator comfort, and the large-scale depth adjustment is very easy to set.

When it comes to portability, the SP6000J1 is a more portable option compared to others. Magnesium is the magic ingredient behind this saw’s portability. Roughly 70-80% lighter than steel, magnesium can also take heavy hits before it’s in shambles.

That’s why the SP6000J1 is ideal for use in the workshop or in a remote job site. Plus, a comfortable, rubberized grip gives desirable ergonomic comforts and reduces hand fatigue for prolonged use.

Versatile Range of Application

The saw comes for a wide range of applications and uses. People who can use this track saw include but not limited to- cabinet installers, stair installers, flooring installers, finish carpenters, cabinet manufacturers.

It’s suitable for cutting sheet material, trim and finish work, also for remodeling. It’s also ideal for woodworkers for cutting large wood panels and materials. Although the saw can cut a lot of heavy materials, it works best for cutting long wood panels.

When complex angular cuts, miter cuts, long rip cuts, plunge cuts are on the menu, a track saw can save the day. Similarly, the SP6000J1 can handle a lot of different cuts provided that you know how to handle the tool (get my drift?).

Still, the SP6000J1 has its limits. For instance, if you’re looking for intricate irregular cuts, band saws would be your best bet. You can try and use this track saw to get some irregular cuts, but the results aren’t as promising.

Built-in Dust Extraction

No woodworker wants sawdust flying all over their face when cutting through a sheet of wood. And if you don’t have a proper dust blower included in the track saw, the thick layer of dust will be a big blow to your productivity.

Nevertheless, none of these shenanigans will happen with the SP6000J1 because it has an internal dust blower. The blower is positioned on the right side of the saw. The positioning is intelligent because the user is always on the left side of the saw. So, the dust won’t come towards you. It never came towards me when I was having a go with this track saw.

Also, the dust blower is downward-facing. So, the dust may cause a rampage on the ground, but it’ll not hover around your face as you try to get the complicated miter, rip, or plunge cut just right!
